Origin
From Khavinson's St. Petersburg institute, described as the active piece of an extract from calf blood vessels (Slavinorm). A capsule called Vesugen is sold in Russia as a dietary supplement, not a medicine.
How it works
Not established. Computer docking predicts it fits into DNA near a cell-division gene promoter. In cultures it raised a cell-division marker (Ki-67) in rat vessel tissue and lowered aging markers (p16, p21) in aging stem cells.
What the research shows
In Alzheimer's-model mice it restored mature dendritic spines on brain cells, but memory-related electrical signaling did not significantly improve. In rat vessel and organ cultures it increased cell-division markers and tissue growth. Developer papers cite older human reports in elderly heart patients and people with memory complaints, but give no numbers or controls. Oral absorption and human pharmacokinetics are unmeasured.
Key studies
- Khavinson et al., Pharmaceuticals 2021 Restored dendritic spines in Alzheimer's-model mice; no significant improvement in memory signaling.
- Khavinson et al., Advances in Gerontology 2015 Raised Ki-67 in young and old rat vessel tissue.
- Sokolova et al., Advances in Gerontology 2016 Parent extract increased small brain vessel density in old rats but not blood flow.
Safety findings
No published adverse-event data. Because it is claimed to stimulate cell division in vessel tissue, effects in cancer or abnormal vessel growth are a theoretical concern.
Regulatory status
Not FDA-approved and not on any FDA compounding list checked, so it cannot lawfully be compounded. The Russian capsule is a registered dietary supplement in Russia only. Not named on the 2026 WADA List; most likely falls under S0.
